BANGLADESH MEDICAL ASSOCIATION UK
The association was formed during the movement for the creation of our independent state of Bangladesh I March 1971 at London. An office was established at Camden town, North London. The association’s contribution to Bangladesh independence movement was substantial. The association incorporated under the Companies act 1985 as a private company on 25th July 1985
As a professional organisation
Since the independence of Bangladesh the Association has continued to develop as a well known non political professional organisation in the uk embracing as its member’s doctors of Bangladeshi Origin and working all over the UK with established regional structures
Main activities of the association
To promote medical and allied sciences to promote social & cultural activities
To organise charitable activities
To look after the interest of the members of the association
To promote understanding among the medical organizations
To provide mentoring, counselling and Career Advice.
To share with members with happy and unhappy occasions
To foster close link with the other medical associations world wide
This is a formal annual event when the organisation takes the opportunity of inviting the dignitaries from the other medical professions and allied bodies like Royal Medical Colleges, The General Medical Council and British Medical Association, High Commissioner of Bangladesh & Members of Her Majesty’s Govt.
It is an annual weekend event. It provides a very enjoyable family gathering where friends and colleagues can find new friends and meet their old ones. It gives educational opportunities through various PFEA meetings. It is an enjoyable event to offer the members very entertaining programs like Bengali Drama, musical events and variety performances. Overall it is an enjoyable occasion lasting for three days.
Mentoring counselling and support
This role is fulfilled by some senior members of the association regularly providing honorary clinical attachments in Hospitals for newly arrived doctors, before and after PLAB tests. The association helps by putting them in the right track for initial jobs, at the same time being available for future support. BDMA considered and provided financial support to some members and some non-members for the PLAB test.
The association also raises and donates money to different organisations in Bangladesh. It supplies books and journals and equipments to medical colleges in Bangladesh. It also gives financial support to hospitals in Bangladesh. It always comes forward to help the general population in Bangladesh during any natural calamities.
A few notable achievements of BDMAUK
The association had the privilege of being a Trustee of the Bangladesh Centre, our National Heritage, in the UK by contributing large sums of money to its purchase.
The Association has organised one day conference/seminar for emergency medicine in Dhaka and two days international congress at Dhaka and Health Camp at Sarishabari, Mymensing, Bangladesh I 2008
The Association elected its first member to the General Medical Council in 1994 and second member in 1999
The Association has donated a huge sums of money to the Health Secretary of newly independent Bangladesh in 1973
Organised International Congress and health Camp in Bangladesh in 2002 and 2007
The Association has contributed money to build an orphanage in the sidor affected area called Bagbaria, Pirozpur, Bangladesh.
Our younger generation, doctors and non doctors consider the Association as our national forum and this must be our most important achievement.
